ATM/Visa Chek (Debit) Card
Q. Are all merchants required to get an approval or authorization code before accepting my ATM/Visa Chek (Debit) Card?A. Merchants are not required to call for an authorization each time they accept your card. It is the responsibility of the cardholder to maintain adequate funds in the account for all purchases.
Q. What happens if a charge is posted on my account in error?
A. You are required to notify the credit union immediately when any unauthorized transaction has posted to your account. You will be required to complete a Visa Chek (Debit) Card Dispute form and an affidavit of fraud that must be notarized. These forms can be completed at any location, emailed or faxed to you while they can be sent back in the same manner an original copy with your signature must be mailed as well to Marine Federal Credit Union ATTN Visa Chek (Debit) Card Dispute PO Box 1551 Jacksonville NC 28541-1551. Q. If my spouse is overseas can I use my Power of Attorney to PIN their ATM/Visa Chek (Debit) Card?
A. Yes, as long as you present or have already presented your Power of Attorney to a Marine Federal employee to place on file you can PIN the card yourself.
Q. Can a joint owner order an ATM/Visa Chek (Debit) Card for the primary if neither member has ever had a card before? What if they had a card before?
A. No, If neither of you has never had an ATM/Visa Chek (Debit) Card then a request signed by both parties must be provided to Marine FCU this can be faxed or mailed to us at: 910.355.7871 or Marine Federal Credit Union ATTN ATM/Visa Chek (Debit) Card Dept PO Box 1551 Jacksonville NC 28541-1551. Both members can also go by any location to place the order. If both persons have previously had an ATM/Visa Chek (Debit) Card then an additional card can be ordered via phone at 800.225.3967 or online via MFCU@Home. To order online: log into MFCU@Home enter your account number and password and click the "Enter" icon to get to the welcome page. Click on the "Secure Forms" at the top then the link that begins ATM/Debit Card, Club accounts. You will be required to accept the Electronic Funds Transfer Agreement and Disclosure before proceeding. Once accepted if you are ordering a card for the primary member then you will simply scroll down and check the box to order a card and then specify whether or not you have an existing checking account by clicking the appropriate box then the "Submit" icon at the end of the page. To order a card for the joint follow the same steps but enter the joints name into the box at the top of the page. Note: Each card must be ordered individually by changing the name at the top of the page.
Q. At what age are you permitted to get a Visa Chek (Debit) Card?
A. Once a member reaches the age of sixteen they are permitted to get an ATM/Visa Chek (Debit) Card of their own however a parent or legal representative must be on the account and also sign the card contract to permit the minor to have this service.
Q. If I do not have a checking account can I still have a Visa Chek (Debit) Card?
A. Yes, you can have an ATM/Visa Chek (Debit) Card with an ATM/Debit account open. This is like a checking account however checks can not be ordered on this type of account.
Q. How do I order and/or apply for a Visa Chek (Debit) Card online?
A.You will need to sign on to MFCU@Home, click the "Secure Forms" icon then the middle link that begins ATM/Debit card. You will have to choose "Accept" at the end of the Electronic Funds Transfer Agreement and Disclosure to proceed. Once accepted if you are ordering a card for the primary member scroll down and check the box that states "Please order an ATM/VISAŽ Chek Card" you will be required to accept the "Regulation E Disclosure" before proceeding. Check one of the three applicable remaining boxes and click the "Submit" icon at the end of the page. To order a card for the joint follow the same steps but enter the joints name into the box at the top of the page. Note: Each card must be ordered individually by changing the name at the top of the page.
Q. What is the difference between my ATM/Visa Chek (Debit) card and my credit card?
A. When you use your ATM/Visa Chek (Debit) card as a signature based transaction you are authorizing that vendor to take money directly from your Marine FCU checking account balance. When you use your credit card you are using money from a revolving line of credit with a pre-established agreement that you will repay that amount and any additional charges by a predetermined date.
Q. What are the benefits of using a Visa Chek (Debit) card?
A. There is less risk of fraud involved and $0 liability when used signature based. Your Visa Chek (Debit) card can be used anywhere you see the Visa logo. This saves you the hassle of carrying around cash, a checkbook or Traveler's Cheques. Using your Visa Chek (Debit) card allows you to pay for your purchase from your checking account with out giving out personal information that appears on checks.
Q. What is my limit of liability if my Visa Chek (Debit) card gets lost or stolen and then is used resulting in a debit from my account?
A. The card owner has zero liability if notice is received within two (2) business days of discovery of the loss. Provisional credit may be available but this is determined on a case by case basis.
Q. Is there a charge to receive an ATM/Visa Chek (Debit) card?
A. Marine Federal Credit Union will pay for each owner on an account to get their first card at no charge. There is a replacement fee of $5.00 per card and/or PIN unless the replacement is due to the original card expiring.
Q. What are the ways that you can use an ATM/Visa Chek (Debit) card?
A. There are primarily two ways to use your card. The first is with your PIN. This is how you use your card when you withdraw money from an ATM machine, however you can also use your PIN to facilitate an immediate electronic transfer from your Marine FCU checking account to the merchants account. The second way to use your card is with a signature. You swipe the card and sign for the purchase allowing the merchant to create a debit against your account at Marine FCU. This is not an immediate process and will typically result in the purchase amount being placed on hold and processed with in a few days.
